Mamikon Khojoyan and Karen Petrosyan, two citizens of Armenia's border villages, have received rulings on their case from the European Court of Human Rights. They were imprisoned and tortured in Azerbaijani territory in 2014. Azerbaijan was sentenced to pay 40,000 euros in each case by the court.

In January 2014, Mamikon Khojoyan, a 77-year-old inhabitant of Verin Karmirakhbyur hamlet in the Tavush area, was arrested. On March 4, he was repatriated to Azerbaijan and later died. The cause of death, according to the forensic medical assessment, was general intoxication of the body.

Karen Petrosyan, a native of Chinari in the same Tavush area, went missing on August 7, 2014 and was later located in one of the Azerbaijani villages and imprisoned. He died of a heart attack the day following his detention.

Karen Petrosyan's body was only sent to Armenian in October 2014. According to Armenian media, the delay was caused by an attempt to conceal evidence of violence.

Earlier, Armenia filed a lawsuit against Azerbaijan in the UN International Court of Justice.

At the hearings on October 14-15, Armenia accused the Azerbaijani government of pursuing a policy of ethnic discrimination against Armenians.

Azerbaijan accuses Armenia of the same charges, saying that “ethnic cleansing” was carried out against Azerbaijanis.

On September 16, Armenia filed a complaint with the United Nations International Court of Justice accusing Azerbaijan of violating six articles of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. “Azerbaijan has been subjecting Armenians to racial prejudice for decades,” the plaintiff claims. “The Armenians were exposed to institutional discrimination, massacres, torture, and other forms of humiliation during this time.”

Azerbaijan has filed a suit with the Hague Court, stating that it will “resolutely defend itself.”
