Azerbaijan accused Armenia of military provocation

About 60 Armenian soldiers tried to cut the lines of communication between the posts of the Azerbaijani army in the border area, the Azerbaijani Defence Ministry said.

On November 9, Azerbaijan accused Armenia of shelling engineering equipment on the border of the two countries. The workers who fell under the fire paved the way. Units of the Azerbaijani army took immediate adequate response measures, the Azerbaijani Defence Ministry noted.

The Ministry of Defence of Azerbaijan announced that on November 9, about 60 servicemen of the Armed Forces of Armenia moved on two military trucks towards Lake Garagol (the Armenian name is Sevlich, the Russian translation of the Armenian and Azerbaijani names is Black Lake) in the Lachin region and settled on the road leading to the Azerbaijani army positions.

"With the aim of deliberately creating a military confrontation, the Armenian side tried to fortify itself on the territory, blocking the road between the positions of the Azerbaijani army on this section of the border, using baskets of metal structures," the Ministry of Defence stated.

The Armenian Defence Ministry, in turn, stated that "the situation is stable and is fully controlled by the Armenian Armed Forces." Goris Deputy Head Karen Kocharyan stated that it was the Azerbaijani military who tried to move forward. "There were no shots. The Azerbaijanis tried to move forward, our men stopped these actions and improved their positions," Kocharyan said.

The border conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan flared up back in May. Yerevan then announced the consolidation of Azerbaijani troops in the Black Lake area, on the territory of Gegharkunik and Syunik regions. The Azerbaijani military reached these borders following the aggravation of the Karabakh conflict in the fall of 2020 - earlier, these two Armenian regions adjoined the so-called "Security Belt" in Nagorno-Karabakh. The Armenian-Azerbaijani border both in this and in other areas has not been precisely defined since the collapse of the USSR.
