The head of the Bank of Russia branch in Dagestan, Murad Idrisov, said in the Podrobnosti TV program, aired by the Dagestan State Venture Company, that high inflation rates in the republic are because its residents spend too much on food.

“There is a peculiarity here, the specificity of our Dagestan people, and it is because, unlike many constituent entities of Russia, our consumer basket has a very high volume of food products - about 60-65% of our consumption is food. We eat a lot and eat well, we produce weddings, we see their volumes and sizes. All this suggests that the nature and mentality of the Caucasian, specifically the Dagestan people makes them spend a lot on food. This is since the cost of food in our country often rises sharply. Official statistics [state that] our current inflation is around 13%, in November it was 12.1%. However, in fact, we understand that our food inflation reaches 20%," Idrisov said.

In October this year, an acceleration in the growth of consumer prices, primarily food prices, was recorded in the North Caucasus and Southern Federal Districts.

The federal republics of the North Caucasus are often at the bottom of the ratings of the country's regions in terms of economic indicators. So, in June, Dagestan entered the top ten regions with the lowest level of family well-being, in October - among the ten least financially prosperous regions, in November it was named the penultimate in terms of unemployment.
