On September 2, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that the day Armenians worldwide mark the Independence Day of Nagorno-Karabakh shows that claims that Nagorno-Karabakh does not exist as a geographical unit are useless.
According to him, the killings in Sumgait, Baku, and Ganja were the outward signs of an existential threat that the Armenians decided to respond to by declaring their independence. He said such a choice was taken as a guarantee for the safety and rights of Armenians living in Nagorno-Karabakh.
"When it comes to the status of Nagorno-Karabakh, the OSCE Minsk Group Co-chairmanship has a mandate that the international community has never revoked. Accordingly, all claims that Nagorno-Karabakh does not exist as a territorial unit and that the Nagorno-Karabakh issue has been resolved are irrelevant until those issues are irrevocably addressed," he added. "The international community is required to undertake measures to alleviate the humanitarian concerns produced by the 44-day conflict and to prevent the execution of the strategy of ethnic cleansing in Nagorno-Karabakh," the Armenian Prime Minister stated. "The Republic of Armenia will continue to assist in the preservation of security, human rights protection, and the continuation of daily life as usual in Nagorno-Karabakh. We address our words of appreciation to the person embodying Nagorno Karabakh and our objective is to ensure through civilized means, negotiations their inalienable right to live peacefully and to create," he concluded.
