Supreme Court of Dagestan to Mitigate Sentence of Convicted Former Prime Minister

The Supreme Court of Dagestan canceled the decision to mitigate the punishment of Abdusamad Gamidov, the former chairman of the government of the Dagestani Federal Republic, who was convicted of embezzlement of budgetary funds.

The above-mentioned decision was made in September by the Kumtorkalinsky District Court, replacing Gamidov's unserved part of the term with a restriction of freedom. However, the Prosecutor's Office appealed against it, and the court of appeal took its side.

According to investigators, in 2015-2016, Gamidov and his former deputy Rayudin Yusufov stole EUR 622,000 during the construction of a special detention center for the temporary detention of foreign citizens. Initially, they were accused of large-scale fraud and then of embezzlement. In October 2019, Gamidov was sentenced to 6.5 years in prison, and Yusufov received 5.5 years in jail. The court also recovered about EUR 622,000 from the convicts as compensation for the damage caused.
