Azerbaijan Airlines launched flights to Nakhchivan via Armenia
Air traffic between Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic (NAR) over the territory of Armenia was interrupted since 2013 due to the aggravation of the Karabakh conflict. After that, flights to Nakhchivan were made over the territory of Iran.
Tension between Azerbaijan and Iran hits a peak
In recent days, tensions between Azerbaijan and Iran have reached a historic peak. Disputes between the states have remained and continue to rise even after utilising diplomatic channels.
Turkish-Azeri military drill kicks off near Iran
Azerbaijan and Turkey have started a joint military exercise in Azerbaijan's exclave Nakhchivan, which borders Iran, on 5 October. Meanwhile, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev inaugurated a new border troops military unit on the border with Iran on 4 October.
Georgia hosts annual trilateral drills with Azerbaijan, Turkey
More than 2,000 participants from three countries - Georgia, Turkey, and Azerbaijan - are participating in the drills. Georgia's breakaway Abkhazia, meanwhile, condemned the drills as a "provocative move" aimed at "encouraging Georgia's military ambitions."
Armenian PM praises relations with Iran
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has praised his country's relations with Iran, saying Yerevan will not be involved in a "conspiracy" against Tehran.
Opposition of Georgia demanded recount of votes in elections
If necessary, a recount of votes will be made, said Mikheil Sardzhveladze, MP from the Georgian Dream, on October 5. “The elections went well, everyone had the opportunity to make a fair choice, this is reflected in the election administration.”
De-facto Minister of Internal Affairs of Abkhazia was removed from office
De-facto President of separatist Abkhazia Aslan Bzhania dismissed Dmitry Dbar from the position of head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs while investigating two shooting incidents, in which parliament members are suspected, and ordered the strengthening of security at government buildings.
Georgia announced the second round of elections in 20 cities
The mayoral candidates did not receive the required number of votes in Tbilisi, Rustavi, Kutaisi, Poti, Batumi and 15 other Georgian cities, where the second round of elections will take place, the election commission said.
Russian-Algerian exercises began in North Ossetia
In total, by the end of the year, servicemen from the Southern Military District will take part in international exercises with units of the armed forces of separatist Abkhazia, Armenia, Egypt, India, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, and separatist South Ossetia.

“Caucasus Watch” is seeking local specialists from Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and the North Caucasus region, to assist our research endeavours and help enrich our content.
“Caucasus Watch” is an independent platform, which provides coverage of recent developments in various locations of the Caucasus region for the German and overall European stakeholders. We are an international team of Caucasus enthusiasts and are currently looking for local contributors who focus on social, economic, political and security dynamics of the said region.
The platform offers: I) a flexible format of cooperation, as well as competitive remuneration; II) access to English and German speaking readership in the wider European region; III) an opportunity to join the network of regional specialists through the initiatives and events to be organized by the Caucasus Watch and partner institutions.
