Next exercise of Azerbaijani, Turkish, Georgian Special Forces to be held

A Memorandum of Understanding on "Caucasian Eagle exercise of Special Forces" between Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Georgia will be approved, according to the draft law "On approval of Memorandum of Understanding Caucasian Eagle exercise of Special Forces among the Governments of the Republics of Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Georgia," which was included in the agenda of the meeting of the International Relations and ICT Committee.

Earlier, in October 2021, the annual trilateral Eternity 2021 drills started at the Combat Training Centre (CTC) of Georgia's defence forces, the Georgian Defence Ministry said in a report. More than 2,000 participants from three countries - Georgia, Turkey, and Azerbaijan - participated in the drills. A rapid reaction sub-unit of the Georgian Interior Ministry's Strategic Pipelines Protection Department was engaged in the drills for the first time this year as well as Georgian-made Didgori 1, Didgori 2, and Didgori 3 vehicles, the report said.

The drills scenario was based on peace operations aimed at protecting the safety of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline in crisis situations and improving interoperability among Azerbaijani, Turkish, and Georgian military sub-units.

In February 2022, Russia performed tactical military manoeuvres in occupied separatist South Ossetia as part of a three-week training in the Southern Military District (SMD). According to the Russian Defence Ministry, troops in one training exercise targeted "saboteurs" who attempted to capture a hospital in Tskhinvali, the region's main town.

On 5 October, Azerbaijan and Turkey started a joint military exercise in Azerbaijan's exclave Nakhchivan, which borders Iran. The exercise dubbed "Sarsilmaz Kardeslik-2021" (Unshakeable Brotherhood) "is a fitting response from Baku and Ankara to the large-scale exercise which Iran has been conducting on the border with Azerbaijan over the last few weeks."
