On August 24, Péter Szijjártó, the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, wrote on Facebook, "The energy crisis in Europe clearly shows the importance of discovering and incorporating new energy sources into the supply. Azerbaijan is not the only, but the most important partner in this regard, as evidenced by the recently signed energy agreement between the EU and Azerbaijan."
The Hungarian Minister added: "Our relationship is strategic, and discussions are frequent, as was the case when I spoke on the phone with my colleague, Azerbaijani Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov." Shahbazov presented the Hungarian minister with an "excellent initiative." According to him, Azerbaijan will produce a large amount of green electricity that will first be sent to Georgia and from there via a submarine cable to Romania. Szijjártó said he had agreed with Shahbazov that Hungary would join the project as it would require the participation of at least two member states in order for it to receive EU support. Thus, Hungary will receive green electricity that can partly be used at home by the Hungarian people and partly sent further to Europe by a transit route.
Minister Szijjártó stated that these investments can be realized in three to four years. "On the one hand, its [Green Electricity Corridor] creation would be a great contribution to ensuring our energy supply since it would be a completely new source of energy, and on the other hand, it would bring us even closer to achieving our goals, in particular the goal of carbon neutrality," he highlighted.
"We will soon receive a draft agreement, and, seeing the coincidence of interests, we will certainly be able to agree on the details quickly," the Hungarian Minister wrote about the Azerbaijani green electricity project.
