Foundation Laid for Highway Bridge Connecting Azerbaijan and Iran

On September 21, with the participation of the East Zangazur economic region, the groundbreaking ceremony of the Aghband road bridge, which will be built on the state border with Iran, was held.

The project will create additional opportunities for the countries of the region by serving to increase the potential of the East-West Transport Corridor, as well as the expansion of transport and economic relations in the region.

The bridge connecting the 112-kilometer-long Horadiz-Jabrayil-Zangilan-Aghband highway with the Iranian highway network over the Araz River is designed to be 216 meters long and 24.5 meters wide. It is also planned to build an exit point from the state border that can receive at least 1,000 freight vehicles (export, import, and transit goods) with 500 entries and 500 exits per day on the territory of both countries.

According to official data, the Horadiz-Jabrayil-Zangilan-Aghband highway project has been completed by 59 percent, and the Horadiz-Aghband railway project by 38 percent. This highway (Zangazur corridor) passes through the liberated Fuzuli, Jabrayil, and Zangilan districts.

On March 11, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed to establish new communication links between the East Zangazur economic region of Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, passing through the territory of Iran. As a practical implementation of this memorandum, the construction of road and railway bridges over the Araz River between the East Zangazur economic region of Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic is envisaged, passing through the territory of Iran.
