CSTO Secretary General:

CSTO Secretary General: "We Could Not Reach Common Position"

On November 28, Stanislav Zas, the Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), said that the current trends in the Caucasus region give reason to be cautiously optimistic.

"At the summit held in Yerevan, special attention was paid to the emerging situation both globally and in the zone of responsibility of the CSTO. If we assess the situation in the Caucasus region as a whole, we see grounds for cautious optimism. It seems that all the participants are eager to establish peace in the region. These are the signing of a peace treaty, the legal justification of existing borders, and the opening of transport communications. The region's countries are moving in this direction, and it is very good," he stated.

However, the general secretary of the CSMT said that, on the other hand, the situation is not simple: "First of all, we are talking about the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan. There are shootings here almost every day."

Zas said that the CSTO offered measures to Armenia: "In general, these are the measures offered to Armenia by the CSTO. The events here are different. We are talking about political-diplomatic and military measures, including sending a mission that will realistically assess the situation at the border. All member countries support such a position. The only issue that cannot be resolved is the inability of all member countries to assess the situation there."
