As earlier reported by the Caucasus Watch, on December 19, the EU Monitoring Capacity in Armenia (EUMCAP), launched in October, completed its mandate.
Against this background, the Council – in agreement with Armenia's authorities – decided that the existing EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM Georgia) will deploy a transitional planning assistance team in Armenia to enhance the EU's awareness of the security situation and contribute to the planning and preparation of a possible civilian Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) mission in the country. The transitional planning assistance team is also expected to support the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, in the EU-facilitated normalization process between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Earlier on December 16, the EU External Action Service (EEAS) Deputy Secretary General for CSDP and Crisis Response, Charles Fries, arrived in Yerevan for political consultations. In the framework of this visit, various topics related to bilateral relations, including the implementation of the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement and the EU’s efforts for Armenia-Azerbaijan normalization, were discussed.
