US to send observers to the elections
The US secretary of State Mike Pompeo sent a letter to the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, declaring his firm intention to send international observers for the elections despite the Covid-19 pandemic.
Georgia's opposition parties adopt justice system reform programme
On 16 September, 5 opposition parties signed an agreement on a justice system reform package. The reforms include the shutting down of the State Security Service, Interior Ministry decentralisation and reducing the power of the Chief Prosecutor’s Office.
Georgian elections 2020: new IRI poll
On 17 September, the International Republican Institute (IRI) published the results from their newest polls on Georgia. The surveys were conducted between 4-21 August.
Covid-19 update in Georgia: Government remains calm despite rise of cases
On 17 September, Georgia reported 179 new Covid-19 cases, a day prior an all-time high of 196 new cases was reported. This brings the total tally to 2937, but still reporting only 19 deaths from the virus.

ADB updated its economic forecasts for Georgia
On 15 September, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) updated its economic forecast for its member states. In ADB’s flagship annual publication, Asian Development Outlook (ADO) 2020 Update, the bank forecasted a 5% contract in 2020 followed by a 4.5% growth in 2021 for Georgia.

According to the official statement of Georgia’s MOD, anti-aircraft defences of the Georgian Defence Forces (GDF) will undergo a “complete rehabilitation and modernisation,” while air assets will also be upgraded.

“Caucasus Watch” is an independent platform, which provides coverage of recent developments in various locations of the Caucasus region for the German and overall European stakeholders. We are an international team of Caucasus enthusiasts and are currently looking for local contributors who focus on social, economic, political and security dynamics of the said region.
The platform offers: I) a flexible format of cooperation, as well as competitive remuneration; II) access to English and German speaking readership in the wider European region; III) an opportunity to join the network of regional specialists through the initiatives and events to be organized by the Caucasus Watch and partner institutions.
