Elene Khoshtaria is on hunger strike

In Georgia, the leader of the opposition Droa party, Elene Khoshtaria, announced the beginning of a hunger strike in the parliament building demanding the transfer of the third president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, to a civil hospital.

Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has been on hunger strike since October 1 in a prison in Rustavi, demanding his release. His supporters periodically hold protests, including near the prison. On the 27th day of the hunger strike, the politician refused medical procedures and tests, while his condition worsened. Saakashvili complained about the restrictions on meeting with lawyers and refused to see doctors in protest. Saakashvili is in a weakened state after 33 days of hunger strike, his blood pressure jumps, his pulse changes, and the change in body weight… indicates kidney failure, said politician Nikoloz Kipshidze.

Mikheil Saakashvili returned to Georgia on October 1 and was arrested, as he was sentenced in absentia in his homeland in two criminal cases. On October 20, Saakashvili was also charged with illegally crossing the Georgian border. Immediately after his arrest, he went on a hunger strike.

"My main requirement is the transfer of Mikheil Saakashvili to a civil clinic, because in all other cases there are high risks to his health and safety, this is not what I am talking about, but the Ombudsman. He needs guaranteed conditions to monitor the state of his health and safety," Khoshtaria said.

When the doctors, after transferring Saakashvili to the clinic, declare that he is not in danger, then she will stop the hunger strike, Khoshtaria explained. The prison administration is breaking the law by refusing Saakashvili's transfer to the hospital, she said.

Earlier, Elene Khoshtaria refused her parliamentary mandate, but the procedure for revoking her mandate was not officially carried out and formally she is still a member of parliament.

"Formally, according to the law, they do not have the right to expel me from here, however, as an acting member of parliament, they have repeatedly expelled me from this building. Therefore, I do not care how the Georgian Dream will behave. I will be here. I do not need a pass, I have a document by which I came here," Elene Khoshtaria concluded.
