President Salome Zourabichvili stated that the decision to transfer ex-Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili to a military hospital in Gori and the accompanying outcry serve the country's stability.

Nati Bregadze, Georgia's Justice Minister, offered Saakashvili, who has been on a hunger strike for 50 days, treatment at a military hospital on 19 November. Saakashvili had previously stated that if he was transferred from a prison hospital to a civilian multifunctional hospital, he would terminate his hunger strike.

"I welcome the plan to transfer the former president to the Gori military hospital since this is the place that meets all standards: both in the field of medicine and security," Zourabichvili said in a statement.

She also welcomed the decision of the Georgian MP Elene Khoshtaria to end the hunger strike. Khoshtaria resorted to protest 17 days ago in solidarity with Saakashvili.

"The willingness of the opposition not to hold protests on the territory of the clinic and the decision of individual parties to end the boycott of parliament are important and correct," the statement said.

The Lelo for Georgia party announced the end of the boycott of the parliament's work as soon as Saakashvili is transferred from the prison hospital.

"Today's decisions are steps forward that will calm society and ensure stability in the country," the statement said.

On the day of his arrest, October 1, Saakashvili embarked on a hunger strike, declaring himself a political prisoner and claiming that all of the charges against him were false. On November 8, he was taken from Rustavi's jail No. 12 to Tbilisi's Gldani prison hospital No. 18.

Saakashvili took this choice after he stopped taking some of his medications to prevent worsening his health and for security considerations. Saakashvili insisted on being transferred to a civilian multifunctional facility, as did his attorneys and personal doctor.
