Separatist Abkhazia applied for observer status at UN

Press service of the de-facto Abkhaz Foreign Ministry stated that separatist Minister of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia Inal Ardzinba met in Moscow with Vice-President of the World Federation of UN Associations and First Deputy Chairman of the Russian Association for UN Assistance Alexei Borisov.

“Inal Ardzinba conveyed to Alexei Borisov an appeal addressed to the UN Secretary General António Guterres, in which the Foreign Minister of Abkhazia calls for the Republic of Abkhazia to be granted the status of an observer state in the United Nations, which allows it to participate in the discussions of the UN General Assembly,” the message says.

The press service noted that Ardzinba referred to the UN Charter, which refers to the equality of rights of large and small nations. He said that Abkhazia wants to talk about the situation in the country on their own.

It is worth noting that earlier Sukhumi accused the representatives of Georgia in the UN of taking advantage of the absence of representatives of separatist Abkhazia and distorting the real situation in the region in their statements.

The appeal from the de-facto Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia to the UN to give the republic the status of an observer will not be realised. This is stated in the announcement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia.

The Georgian department reacted to the meeting between Ardzinba and Borisov. “The sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia is recognised by the international community within its internationally defined borders. The international community does not recognise the so-called independence of the occupied territories of Georgia,” the statement says.
