Separatist Abkhazia and Syria agreed on military cooperation

The de-facto Defence Ministers of Abkhazia Colonel General Vladimir Anua and the Defense Minister of Syria Lieutenant General Ali Mahmud Abbas signed an agreement between the departments on cooperation in the military field. According to the press service of the de-facto Ministry of Defence of Abkhazia, the signing took place during the visit of the Abkhazian delegation to the Syrian Arab Republic. The meeting was held at the headquarters of the Syrian Ministry of Defence.

“In development of the agreements between Presidents Bashar al-Assad and Aslan Bzhania on expanding interstate cooperation, especially in the military field, we signed an agreement with you between our defence departments. I believe that this document will lay the foundation for the development and strengthening of our military cooperation,” said Vladimir Anua.

The parties discussed the prospects for cooperation in the military sphere. Anua noted the role of the Syrian army in maintaining statehood, restoring peace, and stability.

In November 2021, Caucasus Watch reported that Georgia's breakaway region of Abkhazia and Nicaragua have signed a cooperation agreement for 2022. The agreement was signed following a meeting between the de-facto Abkhaz foreign minister Daur Kove and his Nicaraguan counterpart Denis Ronaldo Moncada Colindres. "A number of issues of mutual interest were discussed at the meeting. Afterwards, a plan for cooperation between Abkhazia and Nicaragua for 2022 was signed. A solemn ceremony was also held to establish brotherly relations between Sukhumi and Managua," the report said.
