Ned Price, the spokesman for the U.S. State Department, stated during a briefing on July 20 that disinformation and personal attacks against U.S. Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan or her team are inconsistent with how partners communicate with one another, and the parties will continue to focus on achieving the shared objectives. Price also assured Degnan of the department's unwavering support.
Regarding Georgia's recent admission to the European Union, Price stated that while the United States fully supports the aspirations of its inhabitants to join the EU, some Georgian politicians' recent language seems aimed to divert Georgia's citizens from that goal. Price said, "Ambassador Degnan and her staff at our embassy in Tbilisi are determined to engage with the people of Georgia in support of their Euro-Atlantic goals. For 30 years, we have collaborated on security cooperation, economic growth, and democratic changes."
The MP from Georgian Dream, Archil Talakvadze, stated: "No representative of the Georgian government has attacked or insulted the representatives of the United States of America. I understand that the radical opposition, our opponents, want to blame what they are doing, attacking and insulting Western ambassadors, on the Georgian Dream."
Another member of the ruling party, Mikhail Sarjveladze, said: "Well, Ned Price lacks knowledge. I do not believe that the government or a government official assaulted the ambassador in this situation. It does not appear that there were any major incidents or legal violations in this case."
