Irakli Kobakhidze: "Georgian Dream is Actively Working to Fulfill EU's 12 Recommendations"

Irakli Kobakhidze, the Chairperson of the ruling Georgian Dream party, presided over a briefing to announce the drafting of a law for the election of the Prosecutor General in accordance with the 12 recommendations of the European Commission. He emphasised that against the background of "sabotage by the radical opposition", Georgian Dream is actively working to fulfil the 12 points established by the EU.

"To fulfil this recommendation, the Parliamentary majority officials initiated the draught of the Constitutional law with the exact content that was agreed upon last year based on consultations held between the majority and the parliamentary opposition," the chairperson of the ruling party said. Irakli Kobakhidze emphasised that implementing the Commission's recommendations is a special priority and, as an exception, the government will turn a blind eye to legal principles and accept the new rule for electing the Prosecutor General without any preconditions.

According to the draught law, the Prosecutor General would be chosen by Parliament in its next two sessions with a 3/5 majority for a six-year term. The Prosecutor General will be chosen by the majority of votes, but for a one-year term if no candidate receives 3/5 of the vote.
