Tbilisi Mayor on MEPs' Stance on Georgia's EU Path and United National Movement

About MEPs' Intention Toward Georgia's EU Path

According to Kakha Kaladze, the Mayor of Tbilisi, the report on Georgia backed by the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament has no significance.

When asked if he agrees with Tea Tsulukiani, the Minister of Culture and Sports, that the MEPs do not want Georgia to earn EU candidate status under the Georgian Dream administration, Kaladze responds that certain individuals do not want a government that is patriotic to its nation.

"This resolution has no value. A group of people who pretend to be friends of our country are friends of a particular political party. They do not want a government that is a patriot of its country, that cares about the citizens, the development of the country, and maintaining peace," Kaladze added.

About United National Movement

When asked about the demand of particular United National Movement (UNM) members to have intra-party elections, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze responded, "What the National Movement decides, whether or not Melia will be expelled, is up to them."

"The aforementioned concerns the National Movement's internal matters," Kaladze stated. "There is commotion; they are fighting, and I do not know for what. However, as these are party-internal matters, I will not get into specifics. This subject is not intriguing to me, and I do not know anything about it. Therefore, it is up to the National Movement to decide whether or not Melia will be expelled," Kaladze added.

Some of the National Movement members are demanding internal party elections, including re-staffing the party's political council and the secretariat and the election of a new chairman.

About the decision of the Foreign Committee of the European Parliament

When assessing the decision of the Foreign Committee of the European Parliament on November 9, Georgian Dream Secretary General Kakha Kaladze stated, "It can be asserted that this resolution has no merit owing to its substance."

He claims that everyone in Georgia is fully aware of Bidzina Ivanishvili's identity and his contributions to the nation, homeland, and people. "This is not the first time a similar resolution has been adopted. Unfortunately, several wrong issues are recorded in the resolution, and it can be directly said that this resolution has no value based on its content. Because the population of our country in Georgia knows very well who Bidzina Ivanishvili is, what he represents, and what this person has done for our country and people. All of this is well known in society, and Bidzina Ivanishvili did not begin doing these things yesterday or the day before yesterday. Therefore, I do not agree with all of what is said in the resolution. As for the European path, we, the government, will do everything to implement reforms and the 12 points for Georgia to become a member of the European family as quickly as possible," Kaladze concluded.
