On November 21, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg addressed the 68th Annual Session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (NPA). He emphasized the need to step up collaboration with Moldova, Georgia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The head of NATO stated that it was necessary to strengthen ties with all allies, particularly those most impacted by Russian aggression and pressure, such as the Republic of Moldova, Georgia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

"And with all nations that share our views. From Latin America to the Middle East and from North Africa to the Indo-Pacific area, we share security interests and confront the same difficulties. We should work together to solve them," he underlined.

In reference to Russia's war in Ukraine, Stoltenberg said that when President Putin invaded Ukraine in February of this year, he made two critical tactical errors. "He [Putin] misjudged the bravery and fighting spirit of the Ukrainians. He also overestimated the solidarity and unwavering commitment of NATO partners and allies to help Ukraine. He believed that he could quickly beat Ukraine. Russia is still experiencing setback after setback, nine months later. And the Ukrainians keep reclaiming their land from foreign domination," the NATO Secretary General said.

NATO Parliamentary Assembly resolutions demand further assistance for Georgia

The NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Madrid passed two resolutions that address Georgia.

Supporting NATO's Post-Summit Deterrence and Defense Initiatives calls on the governments and parliaments of Alliance members to swiftly put into action the tailored support measures for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, and the Republic of Moldova adopted at the June 2022 Summit, which will further improve those nations' defense capabilities and resilience.

Reiterating unwavering support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine, and Georgia is the resolution Fit for Purpose in the New Strategic Era.

"The Assembly is welcoming wholeheartedly the invitation for Finland and Sweden to join the Alliance, which has been ratified by nearly all member-state parliaments, and which would strengthen the Euro Atlantic security as a whole and reiterating its unwavering support to NATO’s Open Door Policy and the Euro-Atlantic integration of Ukraine, Georgia, and Bosnia, and Herzegovina," the document stated.

The Assembly urges member governments and parliaments to support vulnerable partners Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, and the Republic of Moldova to help build their integrity and resilience, develop capabilities, uphold political independence, and continue to support the Euro-Atlantic integration of Georgia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The document also encourages member governments and parliaments to state clearly that the Russian state under the current regime is a terrorist one.
