Call for the Release of Former President Mikheil Saakashvili

Politicians in Georgia have called for the release of former president Mikheil Saakashvili, who is considered by many a political prisoner due to his principles. Giga Bokeria, the chairman of European Georgia, said that even if Saakashvili were not sick, he would still be a political prisoner and should be set free.

Salome Samadashvili, the Political Secretary of the Lelo party, stated that the Georgian Dream's attitude towards Saakashvili is a deliberate policy aimed at causing irreparable damage to his health condition and possibly death. According to her, this hinders Georgia's success in the European Union. Paata Manjgaladze, an MP from Strategy Aghmashenebeli, appealed to President Salome Zourabichvili to "act instead of talking".

At court hearings it was confirmed that after 8 months of treatment, Saakashvili was in a very serious condition. The politicians have urged the Georgian government to take action and release Saakashvili. They have also expressed their concerns about the irreparable damage to Mikheil Saakashvili's health condition and possible death being caused by the Georgian Dream's policies.

They have argued that these processes hinder Georgia's chances of success in the European Union. It is now up to President Salome Zourabichvili to take action and set Saakashvili free.In recent weeks, the health condition of Saakashvili has worsened, causing international reactions and calls for his immediate release. Oleksiy Arestovych, the Senior Adviser at the Office of the President of Ukraine, has raised concerns about the political situation in Georgia. On December 23rd, he warned that Mikheil Saakashvili, who is currently imprisoned in Georgia, is slowly dying and that the Georgian government has forbidden him from receiving medical care abroad out of fear of Moscow. “Everyone will claim that they [the Georgian authorities] murdered him if he passes away while imprisoned," said Arestovych. He added that this could lead to provocations, widespread riots and revolutions. Earlier this month, Arestovych had made similar comments about the government of Georgia attempting to slowly kill Saakashvili.
